What makes a hand-knotted carpet so valuable?
A genuine oriental rug impresses with its quality, durability, natural material and traditional, sustainable manufacture.
The art of traditional carpet making is an ancient craft. It is currently still practiced in Iran, Turkey, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal.
For the nomadic peoples, the carpet has always been an indispensable household item, which, like the tent, can be conveniently taken along on the many moves. The life of the nomadic family has been played out on it for centuries. The entire carpet production is done by the women. The colors of the sheep’s wool, which is later used for knotting or weaving, are obtained from indigenous plants. Nomads usually produce their carpets on flat knotting or weaving looms and use the tribe’s own patterns according to inspiration. Every carpet is a work of art.
The motifs and colors of the hand-knotted carpets are inspired by the culture and history of the region. Every region, every city has its own history and pattern of manual carpet production. This makes it possible to identify the origin of the carpet. It is named after the tribe or town in which it originated. His motifs can range from geometric shapes to imaginative plant representations reminiscent of the garden of paradise.
In the cities, the carpets, which are intricately designed in terms of material and pattern, are woven in workshops. The finely tuned interaction of various experts creates incomparable masterpieces. Skilled carpet designers create the elegant patterns. Some designers are famous for their work and their reputation further increases the value of the carpet. The design drawn by the master craftsman is translated into color by trained painters on graph paper. These templates serve as a model for the weavers. Depending on the size, one or more weavers work on a carpet for months, if not years.
The wool and silk for carpet production are dyed with vegetable dyes in vats using traditional methods. More recently, synthetic colors have also been used. For the traditional coloration, the expert master dyers refer to well-kept, generations-old recipes.
In the workshops, cotton or silk warp threads are stretched on a vertical loom and the weft rows are worked in. The knots can then be tied around the chain threads. The material for the knots is wool, silk, cotton or camel hair. The knotted row is secured manually with a comb and weft thread. This gives the carpet its incomparable density and durability. The tight knot density and the natural wool wax content prevent moisture and impurities from penetrating the handmade unique item. The dust load is therefore very limited.
The velvety soft fibers and the color harmony as well as a pleasant, barely perceptible scent of the natural products used make the hand-knotted work of art a true pleasure for the senses. A genuine oriental rug tells the viewer a story of life.
